Win 7 will not allow access to "C" drive
So far I have a connection from Win 7 to the other computers on my network and I can access all the shared folders from Win 7.( all other computers have XP) The printer is shared and works. From the XP machines I can "see" the "C" drive in win 7 but not open the folder.........blah..blah access denied. I have turned on all sharing I can find and even turned on sharing for the "C" drive. I have tried turning off the firewall. The connection is wired. The network is a "Work" network. From the XP machine I am also unable to map the drive in W7. Any ideas?

After pulling out the rest of my hair I finally realized my goal. I went into advanced sharing by right clicking on the folder and set permissions for a group called everyone, made sure passwords were turned off. There are still some folders I do not have access to such as Program files but that is the same as XP.

I had the same problem, but got around it by specifying all folders I wanted to share, including program files, the windows install directory, etc. With two desktops and two laptops all needing access, it was a pain in the a$$ to do it that way, but now everyone has access to the items needed.

In advanced sharing options i had to change settings of "public network" : ALL TURNED ON. I have network based on "computer-serwer" and W 7 thinked that it`s allready "public network". I dont know, maybeI dont understand it corectly...... I`ll wait for Polish version ;)

Hi,This seems to be the same problem I had with Vista Home Basic. I gave up trying to share anything on drive "C" except the "Public" directories. Since the Vista machine had two partitions (system and data) I only share the Data partition and save anything I want to share (like downloads) to this partition. Oh for the good old days of Win2K.

I finally sorted it out. You need to get "file permissions" for the Program Files folder. To do this one needs to "take ownership" of the folder. Google for take ownership, this will get a registry modification. You may also have to password the Account you are using to get the reg mod to work. After that enable sharing as normal. You may not get this to work on XP but it will work on XP Pro, W7and Vista.

Had some of these same problems when Vista came out and found the same issue in Windows 7. For me the soulution was: 1. Set permissions on C drive for group\users "Everyone" to allow Full Control, Change and Read 2. You need to setup auser password. I know this isa pain sometimes but to be able access the hard drive on Vista and Windows 7 via a network you have to setup the password. After you setup the password, reboot the machine and sign on. Then go to the other machine on the network, click on the "Network" icon on your desktop (or if not on your desktop, on the right side when you click the start button). Once all the icons for your network computers show up double-click on the icon for the machine you just setup the password on. You should see a dialog box that asks for a user name and password. The user name is the name of the user on the machine you just setup the password on (I know on some store bought machine the user name is pre-assigned by the manufacturer,ie: on some HP's the user is HP_Administrator). After the user name enter the password that you just setup and make sure the box is checked that says remember this connection. Click OK. You should now see the C drive on the other machine. You also have to setup the share for the drive on the machine that you want to access via your network. Hope this helps.
